The increasing amount of data made available by the rising of new technologies for gathering, processing and rendering digital resources, together with the radical improvements in global communication, are transforming the way research is carried out. Massive datasets can now be assembled and explored in ways that reveal inherent but unsuspected relationships. This data-intensive science is a promising new paradigm for discovery and knowledge production.
Research infrastructures should always be able to highlight their innovation potential and actively participate in the innovation process in order to demonstrate their wider impact beyond the scientific community. Interactions with industry (including SMEs) in the construction and usage of research infrastructures lead to enhanced competitiveness of the involved actors and the region hosting the research facilities.
Research infrastructures provide essential resources to address the complexity of current scientific challenges.
This session sets the tone for the whole of the conference while the other sessions discuss specific examples of challenges that need to be tackled for both single-site and distributed global facilities.

Questions surrounding the transition from national databases to global databases will be considered as well as all aspects of “Big Scientific Data”, including e-infrastructures for data management, discovery and analysis.
How innovation can be stimulated in research infrastructures themselves (operators and users) and in their supplier industry?
Topics such as National/Regional/Global Roadmaps, financial management, funding models, legal structures for global RI’s, cross-cutting issues, cross-border access and support to global RIs will be discussed.
Setting the scene for the whole conference, this session will look at the themes identified by the Framework for international cooperation on global research infrastructures so that they can be used as guiding principles for the other sessions.
