Secretary General, European Global Ocean Observing System (EuroGOOS), Association Internationale Sans But Lucratif (AISBL)
Dr Kostas Nittis, is the Secretary General of EuroGOOS AISBL, the international association that promotes and coordinates the development of Operational Oceanography in Europe since 1994. He is responsible for the Secretariat office that supports the association to fulfill its main goals i.e. to: identify European priorities of Operational Oceanography and promote their implementation; foster collaboration and co-production at regional, European and Global levels; ensure coordination with international initiatives.
Dr Nittis has a Ph.D in Physical Oceanography and his main research interests are in the field of Operational Oceanography. He has been leading scientist in several international and national projects in this area, with emphasis on Ocean Observing Systems. He has more than 40 papers in peer-reviewed journals and books and more than 90 publications in conference proceedings. Dr Nittis is also involved in coordination of marine science in Europe as member and presently (2011-2014) chairman of the European Marine Board.
